The third edition of the Sustainable Places conference (SP2015) took place on September 16-18, 2015 at the University Campus of Savona, Italy. Sustainable Places 2015 (SP2015) received support from the European Commission (EC), BUILDUP, ECTP–E2BA, EIP-SCC (Eu-smartcities), EUbusiness, and Ideal-ist. SP2015 gathered institutional, researchers, and engineers, to question energy efficiency at building, district and city levels. Once again, the SP conference proved to be a fantastic opportunity for networking and clustering among projects funded in the framework of the FP7 and H2020 EeB PPP. Participants had the chance to assess innovative initiatives, access up-to-date information, discuss market trends, and envision possible synergies.

An important event for energy professional and researchers. The innovative business ideas presented there seem to have the potential to shape the market of energy services and solutions of the next coming years.

Additionally, SP2015 offered delegates a two-hour guided tour of the Savona smart Campus, which hosts a Smart Polygeneration Microgrid (SPM), enabling testing and demonstrations of different control algorithms and to simulate an energy market concept in real conditions.

3 key components of the SPM were presented during the visit:

  1. The SPM controller: the “brain” of the SPM, hosting the servers that operate the supervision of the electric and of the thermal/mechanical grids
  2. The SPM generator: serving the University campus energy needs, in terms of power, heating and cooling demands.
  3. The “Energy Hub”: emulating electrical and thermal loads and including different prime mover technologies
