Building renovation in practice: Challenges, solutions, and collaboration

The workshop “Building Renovation in Practice: Challenges, Solutions, and Collaboration” will bring together five innovative EU funded projects: OneClickRENO, iEPB, FACILITA, BUILD UP Speed, and BARRIO—to explore how each contributes to the successful implementation of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD 2024). The EPBD recast sets ambitious objectives to decarbonise Europe’s building stock and boost renovation rates. These include the mandatory renovation of the worst performing buildings (via Minimum Energy Performance Standards – MEPS), the phase out of fossil fuel heating systems, the push towards Zero-Emission Buildings (ZEB), and the introduction of tools such as Building Renovation Passports (BRPs) and Building Information Modelling (BIM). It also promotes the use of integrated renovation services such as One-Stop-Shops (OSS). However, turning these goals into action remains a challenge, as property owners, local authorities, and renovation professionals continue to face barriers such as cost, process complexity, and fragmented guidance.
This 90-minute workshop, moderated by UIPI, will showcase how these projects address these barriers from different angles and offer practical, scalable tools to support a just and efficient renovation wave. Each project will deliver a short presentation to explain its main objectives, alignment with EPBD 2024, and the tangible outcomes it aims to deliver.
- OneClickRENO focuses on Building Renovation Passports as a tool to simplify decision-making and planning for homeowners, helping bridge information gaps and enabling deep renovation.
- iEPB aims to harmonise Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) methodologies and Smart Readiness Indicators (SRI) through a unified data model, improving the reliability and usability of energy data.
- FACILITA supports local and regional authorities in renovating public buildings via One-Stop-Shops that integrate technical, financial, and legal advice, facilitating project uptake.
- BUILD UP Speed promotes prefabricated and industrialised renovation approaches to reduce disruption, lower costs, and increase the pace of renovation.
- BARRIO develops renovation strategies at the neighbourhood level by aggregating demand and connecting it with industrialised supply, offering a coordinated response to market fragmentation.
The session will conclude with a moderated panel and open discussion to highlight cross cutting challenges, identify synergies between projects, and draw policy recommendations to enhance replicability. Key collaborative outcomes include increased awareness, stakeholder engagement, and the promotion of integrated, user centric renovation solutions across Europe.
