Green hydrogen valleys: Concrete steps toward Europe’s energy transition

Hydrogen Valleys are emerging as pivotal drivers of Europe’s clean energy transition, connecting renewable hydrogen production, distribution, storage, and end use across local and regional systems. These integrated ecosystems offer a unique opportunity to demonstrate scalable, citizen-centered solutions that contribute to decarbonization, energy security, and circularity.

A collaborative workshop is being organized at Sustainable Places 2025 in Milan, focusing on sharing experiences, challenges, and best practices in the development, implementation, and scaling of hydrogen initiatives. The session will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders including researchers, industry representatives, policymakers, and community actors—to foster interaction and knowledge exchange.

The workshop will also include opening remarks from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, a European initiative that drives research and innovation in clean hydrogen technologies, supporting their large-scale deployment and integration into the energy system. This contribution will provide valuable context on the strategic importance of hydrogen valleys and the collaborative efforts needed to accelerate their development across Europe.

Confirmed projects participating in the session include LuxHyVal, H2tALENT, CONVEY, TRIERES, and ECHO-WAVE. Each project will share its unique approach to hydrogen valleys and their role in Europe’s energy transition.

  • LuxHyVal demonstrates how integrated hydrogen systems can combine renewable production, storage, and end-use to benefit both industry and local communities.
  • H2tALENT focuses on nurturing the next generation of hydrogen professionals, building the skilled workforce needed for a green energy future.
  • CONVEY.energy showcases how a fully connected hydrogen valley can transform renewable energy into practical solutions for industrial and regional applications.
  • TRIERES develops regional hydrogen ecosystems that link renewable sources, infrastructure, and industrial users to accelerate local energy transitions.
  • ECHO-WAVE implements innovative hydrogen solutions in industrial processes and energy systems, reducing emissions and improving efficiency in tangible ways.

Together, these projects will provide insights into real-world hydrogen valleys, highlighting best practices, challenges, and opportunities for scaling and replication across Europe.

The workshop will feature short presentations, interactive discussions, and a Q&A session, allowing participants to share insights and actionable strategies. Expected outcomes include strengthened networks among regional and local stakeholders, enhanced understanding of effective hydrogen deployment strategies, and identification of opportunities for collaboration, replication, and scaling of successful initiatives.

Those attending Sustainable Places 2025 are invited to join this session to learn from leading projects shaping the future of green hydrogen in Europe and to gain practical tools to accelerate the energy transition in their own regions.
