New European Bauhaus: from principles to reality - Lessons learnt on what works, what doesn’t, and why

The New European Bauhaus (NEB) envisions rethinking our living spaces so they become more sustainable, beautiful, and inclusive. It develops an approach at the crossroads of disciplines — art, science, and engineering — aiming at citizens’ and communities’ empowerment. In less than five years, the New European Bauhaus has gained momentum in the European research community. But how are we implementing the NEB values in practice?

This session discussed with participants how several R&D projects have embodied the NEB values in their practice, exemplified by a selection of tools and approaches. The aim was to exchange on practical applications, exploring what has worked so far, what has not, why, and how improvements can be made. The approaches and tools presented and discussed covered various topics, from urban planning to energy communities, from material science to indoor air quality monitoring:

  • MUST participatory design tool for urban planning and its adaptation to meet specific needs of neighbourhood regeneration

  • REGEN project – City Intelligences Lab as a digital, participatory urban planning tool for redesigning public spaces

  • drOp project – Co-Creating the NEB Future: materials, practices, and skills for a sustainable and inclusive built environment

  • INGUMA, WoodStock, NEB Academy projects – How urban mining and reuse strategies were integrated into the design and construction of façade renovation systems

  • AEGIR project – A digital solution to help citizens adopt the energy community model

  • TIMEBERHAUS project – Strategy games for the co-creation of decarbonisation strategies for buildings

  • GINNGER project – Visualisation tools to empower professionals and communities for indoor air quality understanding (IAQ Society)

This interactive working session was organised by the Star Track and NEB Junction Coordination and Support Actions, which used the workshop’s outcomes in their activities towards developing the New European Bauhaus hub for results and impact and helping local ecosystems in the construction sector integrate NEB values into their innovation processes.
