Tuesday 24 September 2024 | 16:00-17:30 | Briefing Room FR | Paper Session | Hybrid

The construction industry is poised for a revolutionary transformation through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR), offering significant advancements in sustainability and operational efficiency. This study delves into the multifaceted applications of AR and AI within the construction sector, emphasizing their potential to optimize project planning, design, construction, and management processes.

The research identifies and analyzes the key technologies driving the development of AR applications in architecture, engineering, and construction. It evaluates the integration of AR with tracking and sensing technologies, which enables real-time visualization and monitoring of construction activities. This integration is pivotal for enhancing decision-making processes, improving project timelines, and reducing waste.

The study’s significant focus is the synergy between AR, image matching, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies. These technologies collectively enhance the manual-based construction defect management process by enabling automated detection and quality inspection of defects and omissions. This capability is crucial for ensuring high construction quality standards and minimizing rework, which contributes to sustainable construction practices.

To illustrate the practical implications of these technologies, the study presents a case study demonstrating the integration of AI in construction. This case study highlights the improvements in communication, collaboration, visualization, and defect management practices resulting from the adoption of AR. It showcases how these technologies can significantly enhance construction processes’ effectiveness, precision, and overall performance.

The case study underscores the critical need for a holistic integration approach to fully leverage AR and AI’s disruptive and transformative capabilities in the construction industry. By providing real-world examples, the study emphasizes the transformative potential of these technologies in achieving sustainable development goals within the construction sector.

This comprehensive analysis offers valuable insights into the potential impact of AR and AI on the construction industry. They provide a roadmap for future research directions and the effective implementation of these technologies in construction projects. By synthesizing current findings and trends, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how AI and AR can drive sustainability and innovation in construction.
